Middle School Music TeacherThe National Association of Music Merchants (NAMM) Foundation has named Hanover County Public Schools (HCPS) as a “Best Community for Music Education” for the 14th year in a row.

“As a school division, we are proud to continue to invest in the arts because we know that creativity, critical thinking, and collaboration are essential skills that prepare our students for success in any path they may choose,” said Dr. Lisa Pennycuff, Superintendent of Schools. “Our music educators bring incredible talent, energy, and heart to their work each day. Through their guidance, students are encouraged to discover their voices, build confidence, and connect through music. We are honored to support the arts in Hanover County and will continue to ensure that music remains an essential and inspiring part of the student experience.”

Hanover County Public Schools is one of only 28 school divisions in Virginia to achieve the coveted status this year. There are 131 school divisions in the Commonwealth.

The NAMM Foundation, a nonprofit organization, awards this designation to school divisions and schools that demonstrate an exceptionally high commitment to offering comprehensive music education to all students. It further serves to recognize the outstanding efforts of teachers, administrators, parents, students, and community leaders who have made music education part of the curriculum.

“The 2026 Best Communities in Music Education award is a testament to the exceptional dedication of our music teachers in Hanover County, the remarkable talent and commitment of our students, and the unwavering support of our school system and community,” said Dr. Keith Matthews, HCPS Performing Arts Curriculum Specialist. “Together, we create an environment where music education thrives and continues to inspire excellence.”

To earn the recognition, the Music Research Institute at the University of Kansas evaluated HCPS on factors such as funding, graduation requirements, student participation in music classes, instructional time, facilities, program support, and community music-making opportunities.
